MURDER CHARGES ATTEMPT – SHOOTINGS
Under Illinois law there are four types of murder charges.
They include:
- 1st degree murder
- 2nd degree murder
- involuntary manslaughter
- reckless homicide
First degree murder means you intentionally planned out the murder and carries a minimum 20 year sentence if convicted. A 2nd degree murder is Class 1 Felony and carries 4 to 20 years in prison.
Depending on the situation, a judge may offer probation instead of jail time. Involuntary manslaughter charges are sought when you unintentionally kill someone. Sentences include jail time or probation. Lastly reckless homicide is when your reckless act of driving a car, snowmobile or watercraft results in the death of a person. If the reckless homicide crime is deemed a Class 3 or Class 2 felony, the amount of jail time or a probation sentence will vary.
